The 'unprofessional' choice that became my business superpower
Jun 15, 2025
This Week's Message...
- How a business coach tried to make me wear suits (and why I said "hell no")
- The surprising way my "unprofessional" style is helping build my business
- A financial advisor's success story after ditching the "typical" industry look
Dear Entrepreneur,
As I pack my brightest Lilly Pulitzer pieces for this week's Pink Retreat, I can't help but smile thinking about the business coach who once told me I needed to wear suits and stilettos to be "taken seriously."
🙄🙄🙄
Let me take you back to 2017...
I had just moved from Massachusetts (land of black, brown, and more brown) to sunny South Florida. After years of boring business suits while building my senior care business, I finally embraced what made me happy - bold, bright Lilly Pulitzer prints.
But when I transitioned to business coaching in 2021, the "industry experts" tried to put me back in that box. You know the one - the stereotype that successful business coaches must be serious-looking (usually older white men) in power suits.
Here's the truth: I built a $17M business working just 16 hours per week not because of what I was wearing but because I built a business with a mission-driven team who ran on systems that provided exceptional care to seniors in their homes.
So why couldn’t I do that again while wearing whatever made me feel most authentically me?
That's when it hit me - my "unprofessional" appearance wasn't a weakness. It was my superpower.
When people underestimate the woman in bright prints, they're not ready for her to drop knowledge about scaling businesses and creating freedom-based systems.
So now I encourage other women entrepreneurs to do the same, like Heather, (a financial advisor) who shared how embracing her authentic style transformed not just her wardrobe, but her entire business mindset. She ditched the "typical financial advisor look" and guess what? Her business grew when she started showing up as herself.
Here's your Sunday Shift Challenge: What "industry standard" are you forcing yourself to follow that doesn't align with who you really are? What would happen if you dared to stand out instead of fitting in?
This week, I'll be in a sea of 400 Lilly-loving women at The Pink Retreat. But even there, I'll stand out by being uniquely me. Because that's what building a legacy business is all about - having the courage to do it your way.
Remember: Your authenticity is your advantage. Use it.
Here's to building businesses as unique as we are!
Remember to live your one life,

"The world needs you to be exactly who you are, not a watered-down version of what others think you should be. Your uniqueness isn't just an asset - it's your competitive advantage. When you show up authentically, you give others permission to do the same. That's not just building a business, that's creating a legacy."
Move
One simple action step to improve your business this week.
Take 15 minutes to audit your business for areas where you're following "industry standards" that don't align with your authentic self. Look at your:
- Marketing voice
- Pricing structure
- Client processes
- Working hours
- Dress code
- Service delivery
Choose ONE area where you've been playing it safe and create a plan to do it YOUR way instead. Remember: Breaking the mold isn't just about being different - it's about being effectively unique in a way that serves your clients better.

Hi, I’m Heather—a Financial Advisor (yes, a woman in a male-dominated industry!).
For years, I was told to “dress the part”—old-school style: blazers, heels, dresses, and lots of black. That uniform became my default.
Then I met Sailynn earlier this year, and everything changed. One of the first things she encouraged me to do? Break the mold. Step away from the “typical Financial Advisor look.” Ditch the black. Embrace color.
Bringing color back into my wardrobe didn’t just change how I looked—it changed how I felt. I walk out the door feeling more like me. More comfortable. Less stressed. More powerful.
It’s amazing what happens when you show up as your authentic self. My mindset has shifted. My business has grown.
Thank you, Sailynn. You’ve helped me bring light—and color—back into my life. Xx!
