Business #1 is why Business #2 is stuck.
May 17, 2026
This Week's Message...
- The reason your second business is struggling isn’t your idea, your offer, or your effort. It’s the foundation of your first one.
- You can’t build forward when something behind you is still pulling you back in daily.
- The solution isn’t to pause Business #2. It’s to finally fix the foundation of Business #1 — so you can run it in 16 hours a week and spend the rest of your time on what’s next.
Dear Entrepreneur,
Last weekend I was surrounded by 300 incredible women at Entreprenista Founders Weekend.
Women who have built real businesses. Service-based businesses with real revenue, real teams, real proof of what they’re capable of.
And over and over again, I had a version of the same conversation.
“I’ve been running my business for years. It’s doing well. But I’ve started a second one, something I’m really excited about. And I cannot get any traction on it.”
I would ask a few questions. And every time, the same picture emerged.
The first business, the one that’s been running for years, the one making the money, does not run without her.
Every day something pulls her back in. A question from the team she’s answered a hundred times. A client issue that escalates to her because no one else owns the outcome. A decision that sits unresolved until she makes it.
So she’s showing up for Business #2 with whatever time and energy is left over after Business #1 drains her dry.
Which is usually not much.
Here’s What’s Actually Happening
On the outside, it looks like a scaling problem with the second business.
But here’s the truth: the second business isn’t the problem.
The first one was never designed to run without you.
So now you have two compounding issues happening at the same time 🤹♀️
— Business #1 is being operationally drained, your time and attention are split, and it was never built to handle that.
— Business #1 is being financially drained, the revenue from your primary business is funding the early stages of something that isn’t profitable yet.
— Business #2 is being talent-drained, you’re giving it whatever is left of you after the first one takes what it needs. Which means your best thinking, your best energy, your best leadership is going to triage, not to growth.
And then there’s the part no one talks about.
The profit problem.
When a business was built to run with you rather than without you, the margins are almost never built to support what you’re trying to do now. The revenue looks solid. The profit left over after your salary, your team, and your overhead? That’s where the strain shows up.
You’re funding a startup with a business that wasn’t designed to fund anything extra.
No wonder it feels impossible.
This Isn’t a Second Business Problem
I want to say this as clearly as I can:
Your second business idea is probably good. Your execution is probably solid. Your instincts are probably right.
The problem is structural. And it lives in the first business.
Because you’re not just the owner of Business #2. You’re still the operator of Business #1. And no one can do both well at the same time.
Not because you’re not capable. Because you’re human.
You’re trying to build forward with something still holding you back. That’s not a motivation problem. That’s a math problem.
What To Do Instead
There is a blind spot that most million-dollar business owners have when they get to this stage. And it’s not something they did wrong, it’s something that was never on the map.
They built the business to run. They never built it to run without them.
If you want to know exactly where that gap lives in your business, the structural holes that keep pulling you back in, I’ve built a free guide specifically for this.
The $1M+ Business Owner’s Blind Spot walks you through the four areas where owner-dependent businesses almost always have cracks. Not theory. A real assessment you can use on your actual business today.
Download it, do the work, and you’ll know exactly where to focus.

The Deeper Fix
Once you know where the gaps are, here’s what I want you to consider.
The solution is not to put the second business on hold for 90 days.
The solution is to stop duct-taping the first one and spend 90 days actually redesigning its foundation so it’s built to run without you. For good.
“I’ve tried fixing it before and it didn’t work.”
I hear that. And I want to address it directly.
The reason past attempts haven’t stuck isn’t because you didn’t try hard enough.
It’s because you were trying to fix the right problem without the right system.
You were operating on effort, intuition, and good advice, not a proven, sequenced framework built specifically for businesses at your revenue level.
That’s the difference that The 16-Hour Owner System makes.
This is the exact system I used to go from 80+ hour weeks to 16, while growing my senior home care franchise from $1M to $3.3M. It’s not a concept. It’s a sequenced operational rebuild with a specific order of operations, built around the four pillars that remove owner dependency at the root: Structure, Systems, Support, and Streamline.
Jennifer is a digital marketing agency owner who came to me overworked in her first business while trying to get her second one off the ground. The second business, the one that actually lit her up, was getting whatever scraps of time and energy were left.
She integrated The 16-Hour Owner System inside her agency and now it runs without her in the daily operations. She was able to step back. Her team held the standard.
And for the first time, she was able to give her second business her real attention, not her leftovers. Today she works her second business happily and stress free.
That is not a motivational story. That is what a proven system does that willpower and good intentions cannot.
The 16-Hour Owner System is Phase 1 of The Simply Rich Business Experience. It is where we start and it is what changes everything that follows.
Then we test it. We transition you out of the daily operations in Phase 2. And once the first business holds without you, we turn your full attention to Business #2.
What this looks like on the other side:
— Business #1 runs in 16 hours a week. The team owns the decisions. The standard holds without your constant presence.
— The profit architecture is rebuilt so Business #1 can sustain its own growth without being drained by what you’re building next.
— You have the time, the energy, and the financial runway to actually build Business #2 the right way, with your best thinking, not your leftovers.
This is not a pause strategy. This is a permanent fix that makes everything that comes after actually possible.
The Real Question
From the outside, it looks like you’re building two businesses.
But here’s the truth: right now, you’re not really building either one. You’re managing the demands of the first while trying to create space for the second. And that is an exhausting, unsustainable place to be.
You’re not just craving momentum on Business #2.
You’re craving the ability to actually lead both, with full attention, full energy, and a foundation underneath you that holds without your constant presence.
Because you’re not someone who builds halfway.
You’re the kind of woman who built a million-dollar business from the ground up. Who figured it out every time it got hard. Who never stopped moving.
You don’t need to do more. You need the foundation to finally match the size of what you’re building.

P.S. The woman who built the first business from nothing is the same woman who can build the second one to scale. But not while she’s still being pulled back into daily operations. Fix the foundation first. Everything else gets easier from there.
Spark
A powerful thought to align your mindset with the way million-dollar women think and lead.
❝
"You can’t build what’s next when what’s behind you was never built to run without you."
Shift
One small but strategic shift to refine your systems, reclaim your time, or generate aligned revenue this week.
Pull up your calendar from the last two weeks and look at every time you were pulled back into Business #1 when you intended to be working on Business #2. Don’t judge it, just count it. How many times did a team question, a client issue, or a decision default back to you? That number is not a reflection of your team’s ability. It’s a reflection of how many things in Business #1 still have no owner other than you. Pick one. Just one. This week, write down what “done” looks like for that thing, who should own it going forward, and what authority they need to do it without asking you first. That’s the sequence. Not a new hire. Not a conversation. A documented standard, and a true transfer of ownership.
Momentum
Wins from women building $1M+ businesses without burnout. Real results. Real systems. Real shifts.
One of the women I spoke with at Founders Weekend runs a well-established service business she’s been building for years. She’s also been trying to get her second business off the ground for eighteen months. She told me: “I keep showing up for Business #2, but I’m always exhausted by the time I get to it. And I’m always getting pulled back into Business #1.” She had assumed this was a time management problem. It’s not. It’s a structural one. And the moment she saw that, something shifted. The problem became solvable.
Fuel
Resources, prompts, and shortcuts designed to remove friction and move your business forward fast.
One honest question for this week: If Business #1 ran without you for 30 days, no check-ins, no decisions routed to you, no fires to put out, what would actually break? Write it down. Not to spiral. To see it clearly. Because what you write on that list is your roadmap. Those are the exact things that need a system, a standard, or a true owner who isn’t you. That list isn’t a problem. It’s a plan.
