Dear Entrepreneur,
When I purchased my senior home care franchise, the very first week of training they gave us a number.
40 visits a week to referral sources in the community.
Not 20. Not 30. Forty.
At the time, I thought it was just hustle dressed up in a number. But they weren't guessing. They had the data. They knew that if we did 40 visits, that would create enough inquiries, which would convert to enough consults, which would convert to enough clients to get us to $1M in revenue and a six-figure salary as quickly as possible.
They knew the numbers. And they trained us to know them too.
Here's what I see happening now with women running service-based businesses:
Two things. Both costly.
First — they have no idea what their numbers are. They cannot tell me how many inquiries they received last month, where those inquiries came from, how many converted to consults, or how many of those became clients.
Second — they do what I did in my first five years: they talk to everyone. And I get it, in the beginning, you have to. Visibility matters. Relationships matter. Volume matters.
But once you have a year under your belt, you have something more valuable than momentum.
You have data.
And data, when you actually look at it, changes everything.
I learned this the hard way and then I learned it the right way.
When I applied what my franchisor taught me about those 40 visits, and then layered in the 80/20 rule I learned from a neighboring owner, I discovered something that shifted how I worked entirely:
80% of my revenue was coming from just 20% of those visits.
Which meant I had been spending 80% of my time, energy, and money on relationships that were producing almost nothing.
Once I knew that? I stopped running around and started being strategic. I could make more without working more. I could protect my time without sacrificing my growth.
But none of that was possible until I knew my numbers.
I hear women say 'I'm not a numbers person' as if that excuses them from this work. I understand, I used to say it too. But here's the structural truth:
You don't have to love numbers. But you do have to know them if you want to stay in business.
