Planning A Year Ahead For Your Business: Is It Necessary?

Hey there, amazing women entrepreneurs and business owners!

Today's topic is going to be a bit controversial but also a game-changer: "Planning A Year Ahead For Your Business: Is It Necessary?" Stick around, because I've got some powerful insights that can transform the way you approach your business strategy.

Before we dive in, I'm Sailynn, Your FUN Business Coach, I'm on a mission to empower success-driven women entrepreneurs like you with a sustainable system to stop overworking IN your business so you can continue to scale on your terms without working more hours!

Now, let's talk about planning for success. While the conventional wisdom might push you to plan a year ahead, I've found a different rhythm that works wonders for me and the driven women I mentor. Yes, yearly planning is crucial, but being too rigid might stifle your ability to pivot or embrace unexpected opportunities.

In the world of entrepreneurship, we often find ourselves bombarded with advice from business gurus insisting on the effectiveness of the year-long business plan. It's a concept ingrained in traditional business education and touted as the holy grail for success. However, as a seasoned entrepreneur, I'm here to boldly declare: the gurus might have it all wrong, steering you into a maze of rigidity and missed opportunities.

Firstly, the pace of change:

One of the key reasons the gurus are leading you astray is the inherent inflexibility of a year-long plan in the face of the rapid pace of change in today's business landscape. Markets shift, consumer behaviors evolve, and technological advancements disrupt industries—all within a matter of months, if not weeks. A year-long plan, while providing a sense of structure, can become obsolete before it's even fully implemented. By the time you're midway through the year, unforeseen challenges or opportunities may have arisen, rendering your meticulously crafted plan ineffective or, worse, counterproductive.

Secondly, the stifling effect on innovation:

Another flaw in the guru-endorsed year-long planning approach lies in its tendency to stifle innovation and creativity. The stringent adherence to a predetermined plan can create an environment where entrepreneurs feel bound by their initial decisions, even if those decisions prove to be suboptimal. This stifling effect on agility and adaptability can impede the entrepreneurial spirit, preventing you from seizing emerging trends or swiftly adjusting strategies in response to market feedback. In essence, a year-long plan becomes a set of handcuffs rather than a roadmap to success.

Thirdly, the illusion of predictability:

The gurus, with their emphasis on year-long planning, often propagate the illusion that the business landscape is entirely predictable. They encourage entrepreneurs to chart a course for an entire year based on assumptions and forecasts that may not stand the test of time. In reality, business is dynamic, influenced by external factors such as economic shifts, global events, and unexpected innovations. Relying on a year-long plan can create a false sense of security, leaving entrepreneurs blindsided when the unpredictable occurs.

Fourthly, the psychological toll:

Perhaps the most insidious aspect of the year-long planning dogma is the toll it takes on an entrepreneur's mental well-being. The pressure to adhere strictly to a plan, even when circumstances change, can lead to burnout, stress, and a sense of failure when deviations occur. The rigid nature of year-long planning often doesn't account for the inevitable curveballs that entrepreneurship throws your way, fostering a culture of self-blame rather than resilience in the face of challenges.

This brings me to my preferred approach - working in 90-day increments.

Picture this: back in 2012, I started meeting with two other fantastic franchise owners for strategic quarterly planning sessions. These meetings weren't just about setting goals; they were about collaboration, evaluating priorities, and being agile in our approach.

Fast forward to today, and I've turned this successful quarterly planning strategy into a Planning for Profit Workshop. The last Thursday of every quarter, I guide women entrepreneurs like you on how to accomplish more in 90 days than most do in a year. And here's the kicker - without burning yourself out or sacrificing what's important to you. You can find more info HERE

So, why 90 days?

Well, let me break it down for you. In a world that's constantly evolving, being agile is crucial for success. Planning in shorter cycles allows you to stay nimble, adapt to market changes, and seize new opportunities without being tied down by a year-long plan.

Imagine you're steering a ship through uncharted waters.  In a year-long plan, you might set your course, but what if the winds of opportunity or challenges suddenly change? That's where the magic of 90-day planning comes in. You can adjust your sails every quarter based on what's working and what's not.

Now, let's talk about my Planning for Profit Workshop. It's not just about setting goals—it's a holistic approach to aligning your business with your vision. We dig deep into your priorities, streamline your processes, and ensure that your efforts are directed towards what truly matters.

This workshop isn't about overwhelming yourself with more work; it's about working smarter. We identify the key drivers of your business success and create a roadmap that guides you through the next 90 days with clarity and purpose.

Now, let me share a personal success story. By embracing this 90-day planning philosophy, I shifted from grueling 80+ hour work weeks to building a multi-million-dollar business in just 16 hours weekly. Yes, you heard that right! You can find more info about the workshop HERE

In Summary, forging your own path:

In challenging the prevailing wisdom of the gurus, I advocate for a paradigm shift—one that embraces flexibility, innovation, and adaptability. Rather than chaining yourself to a year-long plan, consider adopting a more dynamic approach, such as planning in 90-day increments. This allows you to pivot with the ever-changing business landscape, remain agile in the face of uncertainty, and capitalize on emerging opportunities.

Remember, entrepreneurship is a journey of continuous learning and adaptation. By unshackling yourself from the constraints of a rigid year-long plan, you open the door to a more responsive, creative, and ultimately successful business journey—one that aligns with the unpredictable yet exhilarating nature of the entrepreneurial world.

And don’t get me wrong, planning a year ahead is vital, but it shouldn't hinder your ability to pivot and welcome new opportunities. That's why I swear by the power of 90-day planning, as it keeps you agile and focused on what truly matters. Remember, it's not about working more; it's about working smarter.
