Should You Hire Family & Friends in Business

Do you know the #1 Rule in hiring family or friends in your business!

There are so many opinions on this topic, and there is no right or wrong answer, the key is all how you handle the relationship!

I have always had the mindset, that I want to be 100% owner in my business!  So that is what I have done over and over for the past 15 years!  My main reason was I wanted to make the final decision and control the outcomes good or bad!

I have hired family and many friends to work with me throughout the years and most of them have turned out really well because of one main reason!

Today I am sharing with you the inside scoop on how to hire your family or friends for success!

Each week I empower you with training and a free resource, based on successful strategies that I have used in one of my businesses!  I share my journey with you to help you fast track your growth without all the headaches! This week I am sharing my brand-new free training - The Legacy Business Blueprint Masterclass.  This training is giving you The 3 Secrets (They Don’t Teach in Business School) You Must Master If You Want to Build a Profitable Business While Still Having a Life!  Register TODAY!

When I purchased my franchise territory, I knew that the workload based upon the research the franchisor had advised me to do prior was going to be enormous if I wanted to get a running start!  So, I bit the bullet and hired someone from day 1 which was the best decision for growth but super scary for my finances!

It allowed me to focus on sales and marketing all day on the road, while she was able to run the office duties.  I started my franchise when I was 27 years old and had worked with a woman at 2 previous jobs, so when I decided to start my own business, my logic said to bring her along for our 3rd company together!  I knew her personally, I knew her amazing work ethic, and I knew she could handle the job!  It was the easiest hire ever, or so I thought!

She was phenomenal at her job and really had my best interest at heart in all the things she did, which was comforting when you were not in the office during the day!  However, I kind of “convinced” her to come along for this ride with me, and I did not think long term for her situation.  She was commuting about 90-120 minutes each way and that took a toll on her personally and professionally!  Which lead to her resigning about 8 months in, which was very hard on me!

She was like a cozy blanket, who knew my quirks, knew what I liked, and always gave me 100% because we were friends.  That was what I needed at that point in my business!

But….

Her replacement was a complete and total failure because I did not do my job as a leader!  I hired someone through an organization I belonged to. I did not do a great job during the hiring process because I was “too busy” and the training was subpar!  But I thought because this person kind of knew me from a mutual organization she would be like another cozy blanket!  But oh, was I wrong!  Just because someone knows you does not mean they will have your best interest at heart!

As this hire was imploding my mother came into the business to handle my human resources needs and quickly let me know I had totally screwed up and now needed to fix it.  Which I did very quickly by ending that employment agreement!  Remember I said how I have always enjoyed being the sole owner, well that means you must step up when you make mistakes and fix them!

Luckily for me my mother had the HR experience I needed in running a successful business and showed me how to hire friends and family the right way!  Between her and I during the 10 years in business, we hired another family member (my dad), and we both hired some of our friends who turned out to be some of my best team members!

So, you might be wondering what it takes for the relationship to succeed in business?  Here are the key strategies you need follow:

  1. Set the stage right from the beginning! If you are the one who is approaching them about an opening, let them know they will need to go through the same process as any applicant who applies.
  2. Set boundaries! When you are working together in the business, it is a business relationship. When you are out on a Friday girls’ night, it is a friend relationship.
  3. Treat them the same! When you are working together, you need to pay special attention to treat them as you would the rest of your team. For example, this may sound totally weird, but when my mother and I were working, I called her Alice, but at home, she was always Mom.  I was so strict on this that, I had team members who never knew we were related!
  4. Be prepared to handle the tough talks! Sure, its easy to tell a team member who is your mother or best friend how awesome they are doing, but it sure can get hard when you have to let them know they need improvement in an area!  My mantra with all team members was, it was my job as the leader to do what was best for the entire organization and not just one member, so you had to have those tough talks at times!
  5. And finally, don’t talk shop after hours. If you are out with your spouse, significant other, family, friends, and enjoying non work time, don’t talk shop!  This would drive my dad crazy when my mom and I would do this, so I would try and limit it at all costs!  We all need a break from business!

In summary, I have found great success in hiring family and friends throughout the past 15 years, but it takes boundaries!  You must set them and honor them!  As a leader it is easy to shy away from accepting help in your business, but if you want to build a business that will last for the long term, you must grow your team!  Hiring someone you know can be a HUGE benefit to your business, just make sure they are the best fit for the job and you are not just hiring them out of laziness or fear of doing it alone!

Again I have empowered you with my free masterclass training - The Legacy Business Blueprint!  I am sharing a behind the scenes look into building a successful and profitable business that allows you to have a life!  These 3 secrets are the things they don’t teach in business school, so it’s a must watch if you want to have a business that supports your dream lifestyle!  You can register today below!
